火博体育的同伴健康教育

同伴健康教育者(PHES)做什么?

的 mission of the 同伴健康教育 program is to promote healthy choices and lifestyles through educating and empowering the campus community on a variety of health-related 主题. PHEs serve as a resource, referral agent and role model for their peers. 他们 are responsible for providing positive, interactive fun and non-judgmental programming and 教育 aimed at providing their peers with information to make healthy, informed 火博体育他们健康和幸福的决定.

的 同伴健康教育者 work in varying capacities once they successfully complete 培训课程. Some elect to work on topic-based committees, while others opt 在我们的学生健康中心工作.

委员会工作 

Students can choose from a variety of committees to take part of. 委员会见面 for an hour each week and students receive 1 academic credit for their work (HF 315).

  • 公共卫生: Designs and delivers programs and marketing campaigns on a range of 主题 including alcohol and other drugs, stress, sleep, sexual health, physical activity, and general 健康.  Uses social norming strategies to correct misperceptions about student 行为.
  • 社区建设: Focuses on creating community for students looking for alternatives to the college 晚会现场. 监督周五晚间活动. 也关注机会 community service and building partnerships on campus and in the greater Saratoga 地区.
  • 性健康: Focuses on encouraging open dialogue and raising awareness about issues related 为性健康和健康干杯.

  • 心理健康: Focuses on educating the campus community about mental health and reducing stigma 对求助.

学生健康中心

PHEs can apply to work shifts in the 学生健康中心. 每班两小时 each and students receive 1 academic credit for their work in the Wellness Center (HF-315).

的 学生健康中心 is a student-staffed space where Skidmore students can seek support and resources from trained PHEs about a range of health 主题 that are 与大学生人群相关. 这包括但不限于酒精 and other drug use, mental health, stress management, sexual health, relationships, 营养,睡眠等等. PHEs are also peer-to-peer anonymous resources for students wishing to discuss issues related to sexual and gender based misconduct.

In addition, the 学生健康中心 offers a lovely, inviting space where students can stop by, rest and recharge on their way to their next class. 健康中心 有

  • 购买项目 (cookbooks, gratitude journals, fidget toys, nightcap drink protectors, etc.)

  • 治疗狗 (we have a rotation of ~10 certified dogs that frequently visit the space)

 

如何成为同伴健康教育者(PHE)?

In order to become a Peer 健康教育家, students must first apply and be accepted 参加公共卫生培训 课程. 公共卫生项目是高度选择性的. 收到75个以上的分数并不罕见 applications in a single semester (培训课程 can accomodate up to 15 per 学期). 

After the application is submitted, the interested students go through a two-part 面试阶段. 的 first part is with the staff from the Department of 健康促进. 第二部分是与 现任PHE领导团队. 这有助于团队选择最合适的学生 for the program, in which the goal is to select a well-rounded group of students with 广泛的兴趣、经验和背景. 学生不需要来上课 the program with any prior training or experience in health-related work, but should be prepared to demonstrate why the program is a good fit for them and why they would 成为项目的有力补充.

What does the Training Consist of to become a Peer 健康教育家?

Once accepted, students will enroll in PHE training 课程, HF-215; a 3 credit honors 论坛类. 的 课程 is offered every semester and can accommodate a maximum of 每学期15名学生. Ongoing training is provided to students who have successfully completed HF 215 through a 1 credit 课程 (HF 315) (committee work or 健康 center 如上所述的班次).

  • HF 215同伴健康教育(3学分): This 课程 introduces students to health 教育, health promotion and peer health 教育. Sessions are highly interactive and engage students around 主题 that are relevant to the health and well-being of college students (including alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, disordered eating, nutrition, mental health, sleep, body 形象、性等). In addition, students develop their leadership and communication skills so that they are well-prepared to serve as peer health educators upon 课程 完成.
  • HF 315高级同伴健康教育(1学分): This 课程 builds on concepts covered during HF 215 by guiding students through the process of promoting health and well-being among the Skidmore student body. 的 课程 is student-driven and allows students the opportunity to further delve into specific areas of study that are of particular interest to each individual

是的! PHEs who have successfully completed HF 215 and have worked for at least one semester in the PHE role are eligible to apply for one of our fantastic, paid, leadership 职位. 这些包括:
